JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC — batch supported

iPhone HEIC photos are supported. Photo metadata (EXIF) is not preserved.

Why a screenshot is so large

PNG is lossless: it stores every pixel exactly, which is ideal for a diagram with crisp lines and terrible for a full-screen photograph. A screenshot of a photo-heavy page can easily run to several megabytes as a PNG and a couple of hundred kilobytes as a JPG, with no visible difference at all. That gap is the entire reason to convert.

Transparency becomes white

JPG has no concept of a transparent pixel, so anything see-through is filled with white before export. For a screenshot or a photograph this changes nothing. For a logo or a cut-out with a transparent background it very much does, and the result will have a white box around it — keep those as PNG, or use the background remover if the box is the problem.

When to keep the PNG

Screenshots containing small text, line drawings, charts and anything with hard edges are worth keeping lossless. JPG compression works by smoothing away detail your eye is least likely to miss, and sharp black-on-white edges are exactly where that smoothing shows up as a faint halo. If the image is mostly text, the size saving is not worth the smudging.

Frequently asked questions

Will I lose quality?

Some, by definition — JPG discards data to save space. At a high quality setting the loss is invisible on a photograph. On text and sharp edges it can show as faint fringing, which is why those are better left as PNG.

Can I convert back to PNG afterwards?

You can, but it will not restore anything. The detail JPG removed is gone, and converting back simply stores the reduced image losslessly at a larger file size. Always keep the original PNG if you might need it.

Does this work on a batch of images?

Yes. Add as many PNGs as you like and they are converted together and downloaded as a ZIP.
