Frequently asked questions

Does it work with .doc files?

No — only .docx. Save or export the older format as .docx first. That is what modern Word, Google Docs and LibreOffice all write by default.

Will formatting survive perfectly?

Structure does: headings, paragraphs, lists, links and basic tables. Fancy Word features — text boxes, tracked changes, complex nested layouts — usually flatten into ordinary Markdown, which is the right trade for something you can keep in git.

What about images?

Images inside the Word file are not extracted into separate files. You get the surrounding text; add the pictures back into the Markdown folder afterwards if you need them.
