Why HEIC keeps failing on forms
iPhones save photos as HEIC by default because it stores the same picture in roughly half the space of a JPG. The saving is real, but support is not universal: plenty of government portals, job application systems, older Windows software and web upload fields simply do not recognise the format, and they usually say nothing more helpful than that the file is invalid.
What changes and what does not
The picture itself is unchanged in any way you would notice — same dimensions, same colours, same detail. What changes is the container and the compression method, which is why the JPG will be noticeably larger than the HEIC it came from. That is the cost of a format everything can read, and it is almost always worth paying when a form is rejecting your upload.
Stopping it happening again
If you are tired of converting, the iPhone can be told to shoot in the compatible format instead: Settings, then Camera, then Formats, then Most Compatible. Photos taken after that are JPG from the start. The setting costs storage on every photo you take, so it is a reasonable trade only if you hit this problem often.
Frequently asked questions
Is EXIF data kept?
No. Only the visible image is converted, so location, camera model and timestamps are not carried across. For an application photo that is usually what you want, since a location tag is more than the form asked for.
Why is the JPG bigger than the HEIC?
HEIC uses a more modern compression method that fits the same image into less space. Converting to the older, universally supported format costs size — often close to double. Compress the JPG afterwards if a form has a size limit.
Can I convert several photos at once?
Yes. Add multiple HEIC files and they are converted together, then downloaded as a ZIP rather than one at a time.
