How to make a youtube banner that passes: size, 16:9 and under 6 mb

  1. 1

    Upload your artwork

Any size is fine. A checklist shows at once whether it meets YouTube’s size, 16:9 shape and 6 MB file limit, and what the export will do about each.

  2. 2

    Place it

Fill the banner (the edges are cropped), or fit the whole image onto a blurred or plain background. Drag to move it, and keep your logo and text inside the green box that every device shows.

  3. 3

    Download the banner

It is saved as a 2560 x 1440 JPEG under 6 MB, with the checks shown, ready to upload in YouTube Studio.

Frequently asked questions

Why does YouTube say “Images must be at least 1024 x 576 pixels”?

Your banner image is smaller than the least YouTube Studio will take: it refuses anything under 1024 x 576 outright. Even above that, YouTube asks for at least 2048 x 1152 (16:9) and recommends 2560 x 1440, at 6 MB or less. This tool always saves the banner at 2560 x 1440, so the upload is accepted whatever size the original was. A very small original is enlarged to get there and will look soft, so use a bigger original if you have one.

What size should a YouTube banner be?

YouTube’s own help page gives 2048 x 1152 pixels as the minimum, with a 16:9 shape, 2560 x 1440 as the recommended size (best for TVs), and 6 MB as the largest file. Its safe area for text and logos is 1235 x 338 at the minimum size, which is 1546 x 423 at 2560 x 1440. That is the green box in the preview.

What do the green and yellow boxes mean?

The green box is the part every device shows, so put your logo and text there. The dashed yellow box is the wider strip that tablets are generally reported to show; desktop screens show the full width of the same band, and TVs show the whole picture. YouTube publishes only the safe-area figure, so treat the yellow box as a guide, not a rule.

Should I fill the banner or fit the whole image?

Fill suits a wide picture, but crops whatever does not fit 16:9. Fit keeps every pixel of your image and fills the rest of the banner with a blurred copy of it or a plain color. Choose fit for a logo, a poster or a tall photo, which fill would cut up.

What if the file is too big?

A detailed picture can come out above 6 MB as a JPEG. The tool lowers the quality in small steps until it fits, and tells you if it cannot.
