Frequently asked questions
It said my video was already well compressed. What happened?
Compression is not a switch that always removes data. Re-encoding video that is already efficiently encoded can add more than it saves, and costs a little quality doing it — so when the result would have been larger than what you gave us, you get your original back untouched instead. That is strictly the better file. If you still need it under a specific limit, the smallest preset reduces the resolution as well as the quality, and cutting it shorter does more than any preset.
Why is my trimmed clip a second or two longer than I asked?
The cut lands on the nearest keyframe, because trimming copies the video stream instead of re-encoding it. That is a deliberate trade: quality stays exactly identical to the original and the job finishes in seconds rather than minutes. Trimming to the exact frame requires re-encoding the whole clip, which is slower and loses a little quality every time.
What are the limits?
Five hundred and twelve megabytes, and an hour of footage. Video is by far the heaviest job on the site, so a long file genuinely takes a while — but most clips people need to email or post finish quickly and are nowhere near those limits.
Why is there a wait sometimes?
Several videos are processed at once, and if all the slots are taken yours waits its turn rather than being refused. A long or high-resolution video also simply takes a while on its own — an hour of 4K is a lot of frames to re-encode.
What format do I get back?
MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio, which plays on essentially everything — phones, browsers, TVs and editing software. Audio extraction returns an MP3 for the same reason.
