Frequently asked questions
My video got bigger instead of smaller. Why?
Because it was already efficiently encoded. Compression is not a switch that always removes data — re-encoding an already-compressed video can add more than it saves. When that happens the tool says so and tells you to keep your original, rather than quietly handing back something worse. If you still need it under a specific limit, the smallest preset reduces the resolution as well as the quality.
Why is my trimmed clip a second or two longer than I asked?
The cut lands on the nearest keyframe, because trimming copies the video stream instead of re-encoding it. That is a deliberate trade: quality stays exactly identical to the original and the job finishes in seconds rather than minutes. Trimming to the exact frame requires re-encoding the whole clip, which is slower and loses a little quality every time.
What are the limits?
Two hundred megabytes and ten minutes. Video is by far the heaviest job on the site and runs one at a time, so those limits keep one long upload from blocking everyone else. Most clips people need to email or post are well inside them.
Why is there a wait sometimes?
Video jobs run one at a time on a shared machine. If someone else is mid-conversion, yours queues behind it. A long or high-resolution video also simply takes a while on its own.
What format do I get back?
MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio, which plays on essentially everything — phones, browsers, TVs and editing software. Audio extraction returns an MP3 for the same reason.
