Frequently asked questions

What does the DS-160 photo upload ask for?

The US Department of State asks for a square JPEG between 600 x 600 and 1200 x 1200 pixels, in color, no larger than 240KB, with a compression ratio of 20:1 or less. The photo must be recent and follow the composition rules on travel.state.gov. This tool covers the size, shape and file size; whether the photo itself is acceptable is for you and the reviewer to judge.

Why was my photo rejected as over-compressed?

The compression ratio limit means a file can be too small for its pixel dimensions. A 600 x 600 photo squeezed down to a few dozen KB can fail it. This tool aims for a size near the top of the allowed range rather than the smallest possible, but it cannot promise a result, as the portal makes the final check.

Does the file keep my camera and location details?

The photo is redrawn and saved as a new JPEG, which does not carry over the original’s embedded camera and location data.

Does this check that my photo meets the composition rules?

No. It does not check pose, expression, lighting, background or head size. Read the official requirements before you upload.
