How to compress a video to fit discord’s upload limit

  1. 1

    Upload your video

Drop an MP4, WebM, MKV or MOV file. The input can be up to 512 MB, and very long videos are refused.

  2. 2

    Choose the limit

Pick the size Discord allows for your account or server: 10, 25 or 50 MB, or type your own.

  3. 3

    Download the result

The video is re-encoded to land under that size. If it does not fit on the first try it is encoded again, a little lower.

Frequently asked questions

What is Discord’s file size limit?

It depends on the account and the server, and it has changed before: free accounts could send 25 MB and were cut to 10 MB in 2024. Paid plans and boosted servers allow more. Discord shows the limit when it refuses a file, so enter that number here rather than trusting any list, including this one.

How does it make sure the file fits?

It works out how many bits the video can use: the size you chose, minus the audio, spread over the length of the clip. It encodes at that rate, checks the result, and if the file is still over it encodes again aimed lower by the amount it missed by. A video that cannot fit is reported as such instead of being returned too large.

Will the quality suffer?

Yes, in proportion to how much has to be removed. A short clip with a generous limit barely changes. A long recording squeezed into 10 MB gets a lower resolution and visible blockiness. Trimming the video first with the video tools gives you far better quality than squeezing all of it in.

What if my video is already small enough?

It is handed back unchanged, because encoding it again could only make it worse.

Which format do I get?

An MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio, which plays in Discord on desktop and mobile.
