Frequently asked questions
Why is my Canva thumbnail over 2MB?
PNG files are lossless, so a detailed 1080p or larger image can easily pass 2MB. Saving it as a JPEG makes it much smaller at a small cost in detail.
Will this make my thumbnail blurry?
The pixel dimensions are not changed, so it will not be smaller or stretched. JPEG compression does lose some fine detail, most visible on sharp text and flat colors. Compare the result with the original before you upload.
What if the result is still over 2MB?
You are told when the image cannot be brought under the limit. In that case reduce the pixel dimensions with the image resizer first.
Does it work with transparent PNGs?
The result is a JPEG, which has no transparency, so transparent areas become a solid color. YouTube thumbnails do not use transparency.
