The white box problem
Logos are usually distributed as JPEGs, and JPEG cannot store transparency, so the logo arrives locked inside a white rectangle. Place it on a coloured header or a dark slide and that rectangle appears as an obvious block. Removing the background eliminates it.
Vector is better when you can get it
If the original SVG, AI or EPS file is available, use that instead. Vector artwork scales to any size without ever going blurry. Converting a small JPEG to a transparent PNG fixes the background but cannot recover detail the JPEG already lost.

Why does my logo have a faint outline after removal?
JPEG compression smears the boundary between the logo and its white background, leaving a halo of in-between pixels. Starting from the largest, highest quality version of the logo you can find will reduce this considerably.
Can I put the logo on a dark background afterwards?
Yes — that is the main benefit of a transparent PNG. Be aware that a logo designed for white backgrounds may have dark text that becomes hard to read on dark surfaces, which is why brands usually supply a light and a dark version.
