PNG behaves differently to JPEG
PNG is a lossless format, meaning it reproduces every pixel exactly. That makes it perfect for screenshots, logos and anything with sharp text or transparency, but it also means PNG files are large and cannot be squeezed as aggressively as JPEGs without changing format.
When to convert to JPEG instead
If your PNG is a photograph with no transparency, converting it to JPEG will usually cut the size by ninety percent or more. Keep PNG when you need a transparent background, or when the image contains sharp text or flat graphics that JPEG would smear.
Frequently asked questions
Will compressing a PNG remove its transparency?
No. At the standard quality settings the file stays a PNG and transparency is preserved. Transparency is only lost if you use the target size mode, which converts to JPEG in order to hit an exact file size.
Why did my PNG barely get smaller?
PNG is already losslessly compressed when it is created, so there is much less waste to remove than in a typical JPEG. If you need a big reduction and do not need transparency, converting to JPEG is the effective option.
